Welcome to Week 2 of the NFL season. Week 1 had some great games and plenty of surprises, but Bills QB Josh Allen going off in fantasy and real life wasn’t too surprising. He was easily the top fantasy QB after his furious comeback to take out the Ravens. Two rushing touchdowns and a massive 395 yards passing will do that. But, there were some interesting quarterbacks that finished in the Top 10 who we mostly didn’t foresee.
Justin Fields ended up second in fantasy scoring, as he also had two rushing touchdowns and added an efficient 218 passing yards and a touchdown pass against the Steelers strong defense. We know he’s a good fantasy QB, but taking it to the Steelers like that wasn’t expected. He had no trouble moving the ball and this performance should raise our expectations for his upside this week against the Bills.
Daniel Jones ended up as the third best fantasy QB of the week with yet another two rushing touchdown game. He was also extremely efficient, but he didn’t face the Steelers or Ravens, he faced what could be a bottom five defense in the Dolphins. It’s early still, but the Dolphins are weak in the secondary and if Jones can pick them apart, completing 22-of-29 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown, as well as rushing for two, we should look extra long at whoever they face. This week it is Drake Maye, who could use a bump after a tough Week 1 performance.
Probably the most surprising fantasy game for a QB came from Aaron Rodgers, who finished seventh in QB fantasy points while throwing for four touchdowns against the Jets. This game was supposed to be a slog, as two slowish, defense oriented teams faced off in the lowest point total game of the week. Instead, both teams topped 30 points. Of course, Rodgers has no rushing ability left and asking him to throw four touchdowns is too big an ask usually. This Steelers offense may be better than we think, but Rodgers will lose touchdowns to the running backs at some point.
Quarterback injuries
Brock Purdy, 49ers
Purdy is dealing with a left shoulder and toe injury. Kyle Shanahan said “we’ll see” about Purdy’s availability for this week, per Nick Wagoner. Purdy also lost his tight end George Kittle for a few weeks. If Purdy can’t go, Mac Jones would likely get the start in a good matchup against the Saints.

Trevor Lawrence at Bengals
Woof. Lawrence did not play well in a great matchup in Week 1. I’m going to give him a slight pass, as I still like his receivers and his coach enough to believe he can get going. This week he plays a Bengals team that shouldn’t allow the jaguars to lead throughout, forcing Lawrence to throw more in a good matchup.
JJ McCarthy vs. Falcons
McCarthy got off to a rocky start in his NFL debut, but turned it around in a big way to bring the Vikings back to beat the Bears on Monday Night Football. And with a rushing touchdown and two passing touchdowns, he ended up QB12 despite only throwing for 143 yards and an interception. This week he gets a good matchup against a weak Falcons pass defense.
