Welcome to Week 1 of the fantasy football season. This week we’ll get standalone games Thursday, Friday, Sunday night and Monday night to go along with 12 Sunday day games! If you wanted some football, you’ve got it. And if you’re reading this, you wanted some football! As usual, Week 1 of the NFL season is hard to predict. New coaches, new quarterbacks, new schemes, new everything. Plus, some teams will be closer to midseason form than others, but all will have to knock off some rust.
QB injuries
The NFL is fairly healthy at the quarterback position headed into the season.
Matthew Stafford, Rams
Stafford dealt with back issues this offseason and into training camp and preseason, but appears as if he’ll be ready to go Week 1. The biggest concern is if he can last all season if the injury continues to flare up, but as long s he’s out there, he should continue to elevate the play of those around him.
Jordan Love, Packers
Love had surgery to repair torn thumb ligaments in his non-throwing hand, but has returned to practice and appears fine for Week 1,
Week 1 odds
For quarterbacks, we’re looking for high over/unders and game environments where they will need to pass a bunch. That doesn’t mean a quarterback on a team that is favored by a touchdown or more isn’t going to get a hefty compliment of fantasy points, but they might not reach their ceiling if they’re handing off the ball off over and over in the fourth quarter.

Hopefully you aren’t in need of a quarterback off waivers this week, but you may still need to make a decision between a quarterback with a great matchup versus a top tier quarterback with an awful matchup. Below are a couple signal callers I like as spot starters.
Trevor Lawrence vs. Panthers
The Panthers allowed the most passing touchdowns in the league last season, while the Jaguars brought in Liam Coen to help Lawrence unlock his potential. The last time a Liam Coen led offense played the Panthers, Baker Mayfield threw for 359 yards and five touchdowns.
Michael Penix Jr. vs. Buccaneers
I expect the Falcons offense to be better this season with Penix Jr. getting all the No. 1 work this offseason. The Bucs remain a good matchup. Last season Kirk Cousins threw for 4 touchdowns in each of the Falcons matchups with the Buccaneers. And those were easily Cousins’ best fantasy games of the season.
